AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry – New Guidelines

The AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry provides an opportunity for AO members to demonstrate that they have attained a level of education and experience that verifies their core knowledge and clinical skills in the field of implant dentistry.

To qualify, applicants will be evaluated on three criteria:

1. CONTINUING EDUCATION AND CORE KNOWLEDGE

Applicants must list and present evidence (Letter of Verification, certificates, etc. on formal letterhead from the certifying organization) of verifiable CDEs (CERPS, CPD, etc.) over a five-year period, on implant-related material, totaling 200 hours in 18 specific categories. 85 of those 200 continuing education hours must be considered “core knowledge”. The required categories and subsequent core knowledge are defined in the Continuing Education and Core Knowledge section of the application.

NEW!
The following exceptions apply:

  • Members who possess a mono-specialty certificate, AEGD certificate or GPR certificate – older than 5 years – will have the 85 hours of required core knowledge credits waived.
  • Members who have a mono-specialty certificate, AEGD certificate or GPR certificate – within the last 5 years – will have the 200 CE hours requirement waived.

2. CLINICAL SKILLS

Each applicant will have to submit four case presentation forms (using the AO Case Presentation Template, along with supporting images) in the following categories:

  • Single tooth
  • Fixed partial denture (fixed bridge)
  • Full arch fixed reconstruction
  • Over denture

Each case presentation will require a Patient Consent Form, from each patient.

3. COMMITMENT TO AO

The applicant must be a current member of the AO and have been a member for the past three consecutive years as well as having attended at least two AO Annual Meetings during that time.

The AO Fellowship and Certificate in Implant Dentistry Committee will review and approve completed applications. Candidates who submit applications deemed incomplete will be notified of missing materials by the AO office. Applicants with complete applications will receive an email within 2-4 weeks notifying them of their acceptance.

The AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry will be dated and valid for one year only and automatically renew each time a successful applicant renews his or her AO membership.
